Memories From My Childhood

One of the first memories I have is sitting in front of a black and white TV watching Snow White. I must have been around 4 maybe 5 years old.

I remember when (I was around 6 or 7) my Dad brought home a new car (new for us). It was a pink and white Desoto. I was so excited I picked my baby brother up and dropped him on his head....He was crying and I was so scared I had really hurt him. He turned out alright, so I guess I didn't damage him to badly.

A year or two later another brother was supposed to be taking a nap, the next thing we knew he had been jumping on the bed and out the window he went....Oh yeah...We lived on the 2nd floor. He was lucky, he was so young his bones were still soft and he didn't break anything....Just ended up with some window screen marks on his back...They lasted for years before he out grew them. This was the same brother that weighted like 2 lbs. When he was born...For an adult now, he is still small about 5'6" he claims.....Not sure he is right.

I remember playing softball across the street with my siblings and the neighborhood kids...We played hide and seek, cowboys and Indians..Even had tickle contest....You ever tickled someone till they say "I Give"? We played hop scotch on the side walks, rode our bikes every where. As long as we were home before dinner or dark which ever Mom said...We were ok.

We used to gather soda bottles for the deposit money...We bought our candy and soft drinks with the money. We saved the RC Bottle Caps to go to the movies with on Saturday mornings.

We always ate breakfast and dinner as a family. And our family grew to six kids...Four boys and two girls. My Mom always cooked our meals, she is the best cook I have ever known. She taught all the kids to cook. We (the kids) took turns cleaning the kitchen at night. And of course we argued about whose turn it was.

Our parents took us fishing and camping and on our vacations we always went to Georgia to visit our Grandparents, aunts and uncles that lived there. Some great times and memories.

My Mom has always been the corner stone of our family. Dad it seemed was always working...He worked 12 hour days so it was our bed time mostly when he got home from work....

Mom handled all emergencies...Medical, school, home or what ever came up....
I remember her patching holes in the walls from where some of the kids were fighting and got too rowdy. I remember her rewireing the electric stove we had, and replacing broken windows and screens.....If it needed to be done...She did it...I think that is where I learned I can do anything...Just point me in the right direction and give me what ever tools it takes to get the job done.

Mom has always been there for everyone...When her Dad was sick she was constantly taking home cooked food that she knew he loved over to him...She did the same for her Mom when she became ill. She waited on my Dad hand and foot while he was dying of cancer...She rarely left his side to go to the doctor for herself, to the bank or to do the shopping...If she could get someone else to shop or do the banking for her she did it that way.

All of the kids have had hard times one way or the other over the years. Mom was always there giving her support anyway that was necessary. She never asked for anything in return. She just says she loves her kids and will do what ever she can for any of them.
